Bhante Sujatha, a Theravadin Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka, visited Professor John Bardi’s classes on March 26, where he discussed Buddhist doctrine and answered students’ questions.

Sujatha’s teaching takes him all over the world, according to Bardi. He has been coming to this area for a number of years to visit local campuses but always makes a point to come to Mont Alto, he said. “He especially likes the way our students feel comfortable enough to ask ‘real’ questions, if you will, questions about living our lives mindfully and how best to be happy,” said Bardi, whose afternoon “Philosophy of Love and Sex,” class was brimming with a captivated audience of students and faculty.

According to Bardi, while Sujatha teaches Buddhism, “The point he makes is not to be Buddhist or even to understand Buddhism. It is to be happy.”

Sujatha serves as abbot of The Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple in Chicago.
