Jamal Artis

Jump Start Peer Mentor

Jamal is from Washington DC where he attended Bell Multicultural High School.  As a second year student at Penn State Mont Alto, he is pursuing a degree in Information, Sciences and Technology.  He enjoys working with computers, traveling, and relaxing.  Jamal, a previous member of the Jump Start Program, is excited to mentor the incoming Jump Start students.  Jamal thinks that it is important for students at Penn State Mont Alto to know that the "ASC is your friend".  He says, "By visiting the Academic Support Center, you get the help that you need!"

A second year student, Logan attended Juniata High School.  He is pursuing a degree in Secondary Education - Mathematics.  Logan chose Penn State Mont Alto because of the location, campus size, classes, and atmosphere.  A member of PSU-MA's soccer team, Logan enjoys watching the many sporting events that are on campus.

Jessica's interest in becoming a migratory researcher drew her to Penn State's Wildlife & Fishery Science major.  A graduate of State College Area High School, she lists the Jump Start Early Entrance Experience as one of her favorite campus events.  Other areas of campus involvement for Jessica include men's soccer manager and member of the Woodsmen Team.

Renee is a fourth-year student pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. When not on campus, Renee may be found hanging out with her husband. She enjoys being with friends, watching movies, going to the beach, and playing card games. As a previous Jump Start student, Renee knows the value of the program and is an enthusiastic member of the Jump Start Peer Mentor team.  She values the feeling of community and the support that is available for all students.  Renee wants to share her experiences with her mentees and actively support them through their first year of college.

As a second year student, Joe is pursuing majors in Physical Therapy Assistant and Letters Arts and Science.  He is involved on campus and participates in Blue & White Society, THON, and Student Government Association.  Joe especially enjoys attending the campus bingo events where there is a lot of energy and excitement.  Joe finds the faculty and staff at Penn State Mont Alto to be very helpful, and he encourages all incoming students to use the campus resources.

Sam is a third year student majoring in Human Development Family Studies.  Her career goal is to become a guidance counselor.  A previous member of the Jump Start Program, Sam enjoys the quaint Mont Alto campus where she finds that it is easy to make friends.  She admits that when she first came to college she did not realize the work and time that would be needed to study and do homework.  She is excited to help the incoming Jump Start students!

A 2014 graduate of Carlisle High School, David chose Penn State Mont Alto, because the campus is beautiful and close to home.  David is interested in becoming a Physician's Assistant and is pursuing a degree in Biobehavioral Health.  He is very involved on campus and lists Student Government Association, THON, Student Activity Fee Committee, Blue & White Society, CAMP, and Project Team as just a few of the clubs and activities in which he has been active.

Andrew is a 2005 graduate of the Waynesboro Area Senior High School.  After high school, he served nine years in the United States Navy.  A member  of the IST Club and the Veteran's Club, Andrew is majoring in Information, Science and Technology with a career goal of becoming a network administrator.  Andrew wanted to mentor out of a desire to help others like his mentor did for him.

Emonie is a second year student from St. Mary's Ryken high school in Maryland.  A Forensic Science major, Emonie chose Penn State Mont Alto because of the close proximity to her home.  The Jump Start Early Entrance Experience is Emonie's favorite campus event, because she enjoyed the variety of activities and her ability to meet many people.  Because of the great mentoring experience that she had when she was a Jump Start student, Emonie wanted to help others in the same way.

Fran, a first-generation college student, is from nearby Chambersburg where she attended the Chambersburg Area Senior High School.  Fran had to learn to manage her time while pursuing her major interests of Human Development Family Studies and Nursing.  She loves Penn State Mont Alto, because she finds that the people on campus care.  Fran is involved in the Human Development Family Studies Club. The Mr. Mont Alto event was her favorite event on campus; she said that it was funny and the proceeds went to a good cause, THON.
